Deutsche Oper am Rhein Launches ‘Fokus Musik’ – A New Format for Exploring Opera

Chief Conductor Vitali Alekseenok has introduced a new initiative at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein: Fokus Musik, a series of interactive sessions designed to deepen the audience’s understanding of opera.

Each session focuses on key musical aspects of current productions, exploring questions such as how musical form, dramaturgy, and language shape an opera, how text and music interact, and how characters develop through sound. The central aim is to enhance listening—highlighting subtle effects, uncovering details, and enriching the overall experience of opera.

The first event, held yesterday, centered on Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, offering insights into its layered structure and emotional depth. In the coming weeks, Alekseenok will guide audiences through Wagner’s Das Rheingold, providing a closer look at its rich musical world.

Fokus Musik invites opera enthusiasts and newcomers alike to engage with music in a new way. Further sessions will be announced soon.
